About the Project
The San Dieguito Lagoon Restoration Project (Project) is located within the City of San Diego and the San Dieguito River Park. The Project encompasses approximately 141 acres with a portion identified as a restoration opportunity by the San Dieguito River Park Joint Powers Authority (JPA) in the Park Master Plan. The area being restored is referred to as the W19 module (W19) and is adjacent to the San Dieguito River and other modules previously restored by Marathon Construction Corporation for Southern California Edison. The W19 restoration will provide mitigation credits for the Caltrans North Coast Corridor per the Public Works Plan/Transportation and Resource Enhancement Program (PWP/TREP) and the City of San Diego El Camino Bridge Replacement Project.
The intent of the Project is to establish tidal saltwater and brackish wetland systems connected to the San Dieguito River that will enhance the lagoon ecosystem and, through additional trail systems, provide recreational access to the public. Additional benefits of the project include enhancement of existing infrastructure food protection, sea level rise mitigation, beneficial integration and expansion of past restoration efforts. To accomplish these goals, the Project will create approximately 50 acres of tidal salt marsh, 15 acres of brackish wetland, 7 acres of restored/enhanced riparian habitat, 19 acres of transitional area and 62 acres of coastal sage scrub.
